History: Beginning in the late 1800s, toy sailors captivated the minds of children across the United States. However, the real popularity of toy sailors did not come until the invention of steel battleships in the late 1890s-early 1900s. One of the first navy ships to be sold was a metal “monitor” ship. Navy toys were sold at many different prices and ranged from simple penny toys to extremely elaborate recreations of naval ships.
